Two Ballyshannon men are among hundreds of north west holiday makers caught up in the collapse of a Mayo based tour operator.
Denis McGuinness, speaking from Lanzarote yesterday evening, said he was due to fly home from holiday tomorrow, Friday morning, but at the moment he does not know if there will be a plane to bring him home.
"We do not know what's happening. All we h
ave been told is that the firm we booked the holiday through, 'Great Escapes' has collapsed and we have no word if we are going to get a plane home," Denis told the Donegal Democrat.
Denis and long time friend Vincent Kelly, also from Ballyshannon were enjoying the second week of their sun holiday when news broke that the travel firm were no longer in operation.
"Today we're enjoying the sun, to be honest we're going to sit tight. The advice we have been given is not to go to the airport but to wait until a coach comes for us. But out here we can't get any information, no one knows what's going on. I'm presuming we will get home on Friday, we'll just have to wait and see."
Denis told the Democrat that there were 450 people on the flight to Lanzarote and a huge number of these were from various parts of the county. "We have spoken to people frm Buncrana and they are like us, wondering and waiting. Hopefully it will sort itself out. Mind you, in this heat (it was 35 degrees) we could be in worse places," he joked.
If all goes to schedule the Donegal toursits should return to Knock airport circa 11.30am this Friday.
Ronane Travel, also known as Great Escapes, ceased trading on Tuesday according to a Commission for Aviation Regulation statement. A media report states that it is "highly unlikely" that bookings will be honoured, either those made directly with the company or indirectly through another travel agent.
The company, which was based in Swinford, Co Mayo, sold flights and package holidays departing from Ireland West Knock Airport. Destinations included Faro, Crete, Salou and Lanzarote.
